Habits you should ditch

5 bad habits that damage hair

Natura Brasil's hair expert, Edjane Lima pinpoints your hair's worst enemies and teaches you how to regain beautiful and healthy hair.
Complacency and excessive amounts of products are just two of the everyday habits that can damage hair and cause it to lose its shine. To put an end to hair complacency once and for all, the person responsible for formulating Natura Brasil, Edjane Lima, lists the five most common mistakes.

Too much sun is a serious threat. "From the very first moment the hair is in contact with the sun, slight damage can occur to the capillary fibre. "The damage is proportional to the length of time you're exposed to the sun and can have a range of consequences, including loss of shine and suppleness, dehydration, breakage hair and colour changes", says Edjane. Her advice is simple: "Protect your hair from the sun with a styling balm preferably containing a UV filter, or just wear a hat, wide-brimmed cap or scarf".

Another common hazard is the use of hair dryers and straighteners. You want to straighten your hair without damaging it. "You should never to straighten wet or damp hair and you should always apply a product to protect your hair from excess heat. For frizzy, curly and wavy hair, you should use a diffuser on the hair dryer to make styling easier and avoid breaking the hair". You can also apply Natura Lumina heat protection spraywhich will protect your hair from excessive heat from electrical appliances.

Sometimes excessive use of products can also be a problem. According to the expert, the amount of styling balm or leave-in conditioner you need to apply caries depending on your hair type. "We recommend applying an amount the size of a pound coin if you have a lot of hair and a pea-sized amount if you have less". Edjane also recommends using an anti-residue shampoo once a week to cleanse the hair thoroughly.

You also have to be careful when you tie your hair up, especially if it is still wet. "When it's wet, hair is technically more fragile. This is due to a temporary change in one of the chemical bonds in our hair. This makes the hair more elastic and makes it break more easily", explains the formula expert.

The last piece of advice relates to showering. "Especially in winter, people tend to take hot showers and baths. This bad habit helps to increase the production of sebum on the scalp, which damages the hair due to the loss of proteins and other essential ingredients", adds the expert, Edjane Lima.
