Which is the best moisturising facial care: cream, lotion or gel?

Understanding the specific properties of each product will help you choose the right moisturises for your skin.

All cosmetic facial moisturisers have the same aim - making your skin softer. But the way they are formulated, as a cream, lotion or gel, can have influence their effectiveness and the type of skin they are best suited to. Texture can also have a different impact depending on the season and be more or less advised.

In the hustle and bustle of everyday life, we don't have time to pay attention to all these little details. But this may explain why your moisturiser isn't delivering the results you expect. Find out what these three textures are and how best to use them.

Hydrating face cream

Easy to find just about everywhere, cream is one of the most popular facial care products. And that's no coincidence. Its thick formulation has a high concentration of moisturising and nourishing active substances. Its denser consistency is ideal for people with dry skin. In fact, this product can restore as much moisture as the face needs, even for very dry skin.

However, people with oily skin should use it sparingly as it can clog the pores and saturate the face with excess oil. To avoid these problems, there are versions of moisturising creams specifically for this type of skin, such as Natura Chronos SPF30 mattifying day time face cream.

If you have dry skin, we suggest using the Natura Chronos SPF30 repairing day cream right after showering when the pores of the skin are more open so that the product penetrates better.

Hydrating face lotion

Less sticky than cream and with a more fluid consistency, facial  hydrating lotion is absorbed more quickly. That's what makes this product suitable for all skin types, especially normal skin.

Facial lotion is generally used more on hot days as it does not leave skin feeling greasy. Its active ingredients help to hydrate the skin and maintain its natural moisture, making it ideal for everyday use. In summer, don't forget to supplement the use of lotions with products containing sun filters with at least SPF30, or even SPF50 to limit the effects of free radicals emitted by the sun's rays.

Hydrating face gel

This is the best option for people with oily skin or people who don't like the sensation of having sticky hands. Gels or gel creams have a very light texture and don't contain oil, so skin is not oily after application.

This type of product allows for rapid absorption while still providing a dry feel after application. Although it is a good choice during hot periods, it is not recommended for people with very dry skin or a tendency to dry out. If this isn't the case for your face and you want to enjoy the soft and refreshing texture of a gel, then go for it! Especially in the warmer months.

How do I apply a facial moisturiser?

Take advantage of the time spent moisturising to give yourself a quick facial massage! The average amount you should use is about the size of a 20 pence piece, but depending on the needs of your skin type, this can be increased or decreased.

  1. Cleanse your face with your favourite cosmetic products, either in the evening or in the morning. Use a facial cleanser and complete this first step by applying a facial toner.
  2. When you exfoliate your face, moisturise well afterwards, for example with a mask. This process increases the skin's absorption potential and improves its hydration level over the long term.
  3. Apply the amount of moisturiser recommended for your face and massage it in well.Start from the inside to the outside of the face using moderate pressure and rubbing with the fingertips and ends of the fingers.
  4. During your morning routine, wait a few minutes after moisturising the face to make sure the product is fully absorbed. And always apply a facial sunscreen suited to your skin type.
  5. If you apply an anti-wrinkle treatment at night, you don't need to use a moisturiser. This also moisturises the skin deep down and regenerates it while you sleep.
